Teaching Text Complexity, Close Reading, and Inquiry through Visual and Performing Arts - Grades 3-12 The California State Standards define all forms of artwork, (dance, music, theatre, and visual arts) as types of informational text and this workshop showcases a variety of strategies to encourage close reading of these texts. Focusing on historical content, Think Outside the Book utilizes primary and secondary sources to develop the essential skills of inquiry and observation. Teachers will discover creative ways to build students' content knowledge and encourage critical thinking through arts integration. Participants will learn reading and writing strategies and arts-based activities to support rigorous and relevant teaching across all disciplines. They will also engage in a variety of discussions, protocols, and strategies that are easily adapted to any classroom or content area. Online registration:
