MSCS adheres to the California Code of Regulations and California Education Code for non-classroom-based charter schools. We are a public school that can serve students within Merced County and adjacent counties. Applications for admission are accepted throughout the school year.
Students interested in attending MSCS will complete an application for admission, which is limited to the student's name, address, age, grade, and names of siblings (see links below). In the event that the number of students seeking admission to any grade or class exceeds the school's capacity, the school shall have the right to grant priority in admissions to siblings of current students and residents of the charter-granting county. Should a public, random lottery be needed it will be held May 1st and conducted according to California State law.
Students selected through the lottery will receive written notification via mail, and will have five business days to sign a commitment letter to indicate their intention to attend the school. If the signed commitment letter is not returned within the allotted period of time, the school will proceed to offer enrollment to the next student on the waiting list created through the lottery process.
Students who wish to enroll during the school year will follow a similar process as a student enrolling at the beginning of year, but with one difference. After the school year has begun, applications for enrollment will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis for addition to the wait list. Each application will be date/time stamped and students will be accepted for enrollment on a basis of available capacity.
Similar to the lottery program, students on the wait list during the school year receive written notification via mail based on the date/time stamp on their application. Because MSCS is not a traditional learning environment, every potential student is required to have an interview with the school administrator. Upon interest in the school, parents and students meet with a school administrator to discuss:
If a student and parent decide that MSCS will be the best program for the student, the parent/guardian and student attend a formal orientation and enrollment conference during which they complete all enrollment forms. The Student Parent Handbook is also distributed at that time and school policies are reviewed. The student is then assigned to a personalized learning teacher (PTL). The PTL will schedule an initial meeting during which an Individualized Learning Plan is developed, placement testing is administered, and all parties review and sign the Master Agreement that specifies expectations for school attendance and instructional hours. Students who have an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) may enroll if the student's IEP specifically provides for enrollment in a non-classroom- based program.
