Board Renames Atwater Valley Community School After Former County Superintendent

The Merced County Board of Education officially recognized the renaming of the Atwater Valley Community School to the Dr. Lee Andersen Education Center in honor of former Merced County Superintendent of Schools Lee Andersen in a board meeting on Nov. 18.

The decision to rename the center was made in recognition of Andersen’s years of dedication and leadership on behalf of education in Merced County.

Andersen, who served as the Merced County Superintendent of Schools from 2002 to 2010, spent the majority of his role supporting students with the greatest needs in the community. Andersen was County Superintendent during the construction of Atwater Valley Community School.

Dr. Lee Andersen Education Center, formerly known as Atwater Valley Community School, will continue to serve several programs and students including students enrolled in the MCOE moderate to severe program, the Merced County Scholars Charter program, Independent Studies, the Community Day program and students in the Comeback Charter school program.
