El Nido Students Experience College Life at UC Merced

Eight rising ninth and tenth grade students from the El Nido Elementary School District attended a four-day, three-night college and career readiness experience, in collaboration with the UC Merced Center for Educational Partnerships.

The experience, which is part of the center’s UC Talent Search program, is designed to help foster academic and career interests, nurture personal character and instill a sense of belonging at a postsecondary institution.

During the four-day program, El Nido students were immersed in college life, stayed in dorms and ate in dining halls. Students also received campus tours, participated in interactive career sessions, vision board creation and team building exercises.

“It was an enjoyable experience,” said one of the eight El Nido students who participated in the program, “It showed me the opportunities that are available for my future.”

Another student admits that the experience changed their perspective on postsecondary education. “I didn’t want to go because I didn’t get why college was so great. Now that I’ve gone, I really want to go to college.”

Beyond overnight experiences, the program provides ongoing academic guidance for students and families, college and career planning and high-impact tutoring.

The growing partnership was established with the mission to provide El Nido Elementary School District students with college and career preparedness.

Additional college life experiences are scheduled for the spring and summer of 2024.
