Top Scoring Teams Announced for Merced County Academic Pentathlon Competition

The results of the Merced County Academic Pentathlon were announced tonight at the historic Merced Theatre following the conclusion of the Super Quiz. The annual competition brought together 320 middle school students from across Merced County to showcase their academic prowess.

The Academic Pentathlon consisted of five subject areas: fine arts, literature, math, science and social science. Students are first tested in each subject area and then compete in the Super Quiz, which featured questions from all five subject areas and required students to work together in teams to answer as many questions as possible within the allotted time.

After all rigorous rounds of competition, the overall top scoring teams are: Westside Union Elementary School from Los Banos Unified School District who earned first place for sixth grade, Washington Elementary School from Merced River Union Elementary School District earned first place for seventh grade and Peggy Heller Elementary School from Atwater Elementary School District earned first place for eighth grade.

The top performing teams in Super Quiz are Westside Union Elementary for sixth grade, Washington Elementary for seventh grade and Mitchell Senior for the eighth grade.

The overall top scoring student of the competition was Max Menefee, a sixth grade student from Westside Union Elementary School.

The top scoring team Westside Union Elementary and Hoover Middle School will compete at the United States Pentathlon National Competition in Garden Grove on May 18-20.

Organized by the Merced County Office of Education, the Academic Pentathlon is an annual event designed to encourage and recognize academic excellence among students within the county. Materials are centered around a national theme provided by the United States Academic Decathlon. The theme this year was The American Revolution and the New Nation.

The event was sponsored by Merced Irrigation District.
