Award-winning Author Meg Medina Visits El Nido Elementary School

New York Times best-selling author and literary award winner Meg Medina visited El Nido Elementary School on Monday, Oct. 13, where she met with students to discuss her books, writing process and the significance of storytelling.

During the presentation, Medina encouraged the group of sixth through eighth graders to find their light like the main character in “Graciela in the Abyss,” which is Medina’s newest publication. The award-winning author also shared personal examples of rejection, failure and the importance of celebrating small successes and choosing who you want to become.

“We are grateful to have had the opportunity to welcome renowned author Meg Medina to our school,” said El Nido Superintendent Paula Heupel. “Ms. Medina not only shared the technical aspects of her writing journey and the path she took to become an acclaimed author, but she also offered powerful insight into the heart and humanity behind her stories.”

The visit was part of the school’s initiative to encourage an interest in reading and writing among students. El Nido School administrators noted that students resonated with Medina’s experience as a member of an immigrant family from Cuba and reminded them that their voices and experiences matter.

“Mrs. Medina made me feel like I can really accomplish the things I want to do,” said one student. “I just have to not give up.”

Medina is known for her acclaimed work, including *Merci Suárez Changes Gears,” winner of the 2019 Newbery Medal, and *Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass,” a young adult novel which received the 2014 Pura Belpré Award and 2013 Cyblis Award. Her books explore themes of identity, family and perseverance.
