MCOE to Launch New Music Education Initiative in Merced
- Programs
MCOE will soon launch Merced POP: the Performance Opportunity Project, an initiative that will improve music programs across the City of Merced.
Funded by the Central Valley Opportunity Foundation (CVOF), the project aims to enrich music education in Merced by integrating new and existing music programs to create a cohesive curriculum for teachers and families.
“We are thrilled that the CVOF is funding our efforts to make a musical Merced,” said MCOE Arts Program Specialist Noelle Chandler. “Our goal is to ensure every K-12 student in Merced has an accessible, affordable musical experience at every grade, and that families, teachers and the community at large can connect with each other through those musical experiences.”
The Merced POP initiative will focus on increased literacy, social-emotional health and stronger community connection. Chandler emphasized the important role music plays in brain health for students, stating that the experience, study and performance of music holds innumerable benefits.
The project will provide access to music programs for all grades, beginning with additions and expansions to the Merced Children’s Holiday Choir, Merced County Honor Choir, the UCM Children’s Opera and the Merced Symphony’s Children’s Concerts. The Magicbox Theatre Company will also benefit from the additional curriculum options and encourage family, classroom and community dialogue around the experience of music.
