Merced City School District student Rishabh Saha earned seventh place at the 96th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee, held in Washington D.C. The competition brought together 245 spellers from across the United States, with 17 spellers from California.
Saha, an eighth grader from Cruickshank Middle School, was eliminated in round 9 of the competition with the word ‘desmotrope.’ He was among the top eight spellers left after eight rounds of competition and the only speller from Merced County.
Saha participated in the Merced City School District Spelling Bee and then advanced to the Merced County Spelling Bee in December 2023, where he took first place.
Previously, Saha was runner-up at the 2022 California State Elementary Spelling Bee and has participated in the Merced County Spelling Bee for several years.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee aired nationally on May 29 and May 30. Visit https://spellingbee.com/ to learn more about this year's competition.
