More than 650 students from high schools across Merced County put their multilingual abilities to the test for a chance to earn the Merced County Seal of Biliteracy.
The Seal of Biliteracy is a prestigious award that recognizes high school graduates who have demonstrated proficiency in two or more languages, including English.
The interview assessments, held at the Merced County Fairgrounds, provide an environment for students to showcase their language skills to interviewers familiar with that language. If students receive a passing score, the seal is added to their high school diploma upon graduation.
Several languages were tested throughout the day, including Spanish, Hmong, Punjabi and Portuguese. Additional assessors are needed for students in Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Tagalog, Tamil and Yoruba.
Students can also apply for the State Seal of Biliteracy, allowing them to graduate with multiple seals that acknowledge their bilingual skills.
