The Merced County Office of Education (MCOE) awarded students from high schools across the county with the Seal of Biliteracy at awards night on April 23. The event, hosted at Pacheco High School, celebrated the linguistic talents of more than 500 high school seniors.
The Merced County Seal of Biliteracy is a local variation of the California Seal of Biliteracy awarded to graduating students who demonstrate proficiency in one or more target languages, in addition to English.
The awards night brought together educators, families and community members to celebrate the achievement and invited recipients to the stage to deliver a speech in their target language. Student speakers presented speeches in Hmong, Italian, Portuguese, Punjabi and Spanish.
Guest speakers, including Merced County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steve Tietjen, Los Banos Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Mark E. Marshall and Pacheco High School Learning Director Cruz Berumen, commended students on their accomplishment and emphasized the importance of learning multiple languages in today's global society.
MCOE received a total of 1,150 applications from high school juniors and seniors throughout the county. Juniors who have met the criteria to complete the process will be recognized next year as seniors.
The Merced County Seal of Biliteracy is awarded by MCOE in partnership with school districts. School districts can also apply for the California Seal of Biliteracy to give eligible students an additional honor on their diploma at the time of graduation.
