Merced County students enjoy UC Merced Children's Opera production of ‘Treble Trouble’

More than 3,000 students from across Merced County gathered this week at UC Merced for a presentation of ‘Treble Trouble’ — a UC Merced Children’s Opera production.

Directed by UC Merced Lecturer Jenni Samuelson and based on the book and lyrics by Nancy Steele Brokaw, the operatic romp introduced students to night sky constellations and musical concepts such as the treble clef and how notes work. The production celebrates the idea that music belongs to everyone, reminds audiences that they are braver than they think and explores the fact that anyone can step up and do the right thing.

The UC Merced Children’s Opera held several performances at the campus between May 20 and 23. Next week, the production will travel to Pacheco High School for students in the Los Banos Unified School District and Westside Theatre in Newman for students from Hilmar.

An additional free community performance is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 31 at the Merced Theatre, with a special opening performance by the Merced Children’s Holiday Choir.

The productions are sponsored by the Central Valley Community Foundation, the Coastal Community Foundation, Grey B. Roberts CPA, the Merced County Office of Education, and the Merced County Education Foundation.
