Westside Union Elementary Takes Second Place at Nationals

The Westside Union Elementary School Pentathlon team showcased their academic prowess and teamwork at the United States Academic Pentathlon competition on May 20 where they were named second place overall team winners for the 7th Grade Champion Division and first place winners for the Super Quiz.

Held in Garden Grove, the national competition brought together top academic pentathletes from across the country. The Westside team, composed of 12 sixth grade students, was invited to participate as seventh graders after earning the top score in the state for the county competition.

Led by Westside Union Elementary School teacher and pentathlon coach Tammi Schultz, the team won a total of two team awards and 17 individual awards in science, social science, fine arts, literature and mathematics.

Top-scoring student of the Merced County competition Max Menefee earned three individual medals, Ward Saeb earned four in the Scholastic division and Jorge Olivares earned four for the Varsity division. Each student won an overall medal in their division.

The United States Academic Pentathlon is a five-event scholastic competition for middle school students that provides the benefits of the Academic Decathlon and the challenges of rigorous team and individual competition.
